Day 221: GoldenEye (1995)

goldeneyeOne of the greatest movie franchises of all time in my opinion are the action adventure James Bond series which has now seen six different men assume the role (Sean Connery,George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig). Out of all the Bond’s, Pierce Brosnan is the one that has played Bond that I have not see very much of so I took the chance and watched GoldenEye for today’s film. After following a couple of leads, James Bond learns that someone is trying to steal GoldenEye, a weapon that destroys through electronic devices. He teams up with a Russian woman (Izabella Scorupco) who survived the first attack with the weapon to try and stop the syndicate that is using it. Although when Bond meets the man behind the syndicate, he turns out to be a familiar person Bond thought was dead. The film also stars Sean Bean (Game Of Thrones) as Alec Trevelyan, Famke Janssen (X-Men) as Xenia Onatopp, Joe Don Baker (Cape Fear) as Jack Wade, Judi Dench (Skyfall) as M, Desmond Llewelyn (Thunderball) as Q, Samantha Bond (Downtown Abbey) as Miss Moneypenny, Alan Cumming (X-Men 2) as Boris, Gottfried John (Proof Of Life) as Gen. Ourumov, and the film was directed by Martin Campbell (Green Lantern).

bond_and_trevelyanThere was definitely something special going on with this film especially seeing as it’s the first film Pierce did in the series that took six years to come out. They literally almost went with a whole new staff with a new M (Dench) who was the first female to play M in the series and a brand new Moneypenny. The only thing that didn’t change was Q who was once again played by the legendary Desmond Llewelyn. The film had plenty of action scenes to satisfy any Bond fan, it had the perfect Bond girl(s) in Famke Janssen (She is vicious and strange and Izabella Scorupco as well as a good enough Bond villain in a former 00 agent. Who better to match wits with James Bond then another former agent. The only thing I’m not really sure about is how I feel about Pierce Brosnan as James Bond. The only other film in the series I had seen that I didn’t like was Die Another Day. I thought the film itself was very good and I can see why people hyped this one up a lot (I was told that I had to see this one). I think I’ll have to see the rest of his films to really judge where I think he fits among the other Bonds. He’s got suave which I will give him, but he doesn’t exactly have the swagger like Connery or Moore. The car racing scene in the beginning of the film is very cool to watch and the scene with the army tank is another must see. The film was enjoyable to watch which is why I am going to give the film an A- because it may be the best Brosnan-Bond film for now.

Day 153: X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)

X-MEN-APOCALYPSE-9When I was growing up, I was a fan of DC especially Superman and Batman, but it was one faithful Saturday morning in the early 90’s tat changed everything. The X-Men cartoon quickly turned me from a DC to Marvel fan and that was that. So, it’s safe to say that I was super excited about today’s film X-Men: Apocalypse. The world is a lot different in the 80’s following the events of X-Men: Days Of Future Past as almost everyone has gone their separate ways. Unfortunately for mutants all over the world, the very first mutant ever En Sabah Nur (Oscar Isaac) otherwise known as Apocalypse has awoken from a deep sleep is displeased with the way the world has evolved. Apocalypse plans to destroy the world forcing the X-Men to finally reunite in order to destroy him. The film also stars James McAvoy (Wanted) as Professor Xavier, Michael Fassbender (Prometheus) as Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games) as Mystique, Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road) as Beast, Rose Byrne (Neighbors 2) as Moira Mactaggert, Evan Peters (American Horror Story) as Quicksilver, Sophie Turner (Game Of Thrones) as Jean Grey, Tye Sheridan (Mud) as Cyclops, Lucas Till (Walk The Line) as Havok, Kodi Smit-McPhee (Paranorman) as Nightcrawler, Ben Hardy (EastEnders) as Angel, Alexandra Shipp (Straight Outta Compton) as Storm, Lana Condor as Jubilee, Olivia Munn (Magic Mike) as Psylocke, and the film was directed by Bryan Singer.

xmen0002I am going to start this paragraph by giving you a spoiler alert because if you haven’t seen the film by now then stop reading ahead for fear of spoiling any details for you. As far as the film is concerned, I actually really liked the film. It’s not the greatest superhero movie out there, but in my opinion it was a lot of fun. It was like seeing a comic book unfold before your very eyes and how can you not love seeing them in the 80’s? I was just excited to see Jubilee finally on screen, but I sort of wish that they had done more with her if you ask me. Oscar Isaac was well he’s Oscar Isaac! The guy can go from playing the hero Poe Dameron in Star Wars to playing the villain in X-Men. He is such an amazing actor with so much talent. One of the exciting moments of the film was seeing Hugh Jackman as the Weapon X version of Wolverine in the film when they go to Strikers facility to rescue the other X-Men. I have to say that when the X-Men do a battle they do it right because the battle against Apocalypse and his horseman was pretty killer. Evan Peters and his Quicksilver was an awesome comedic relief for the film where I think I finally accepted him as Quicksilver. I left the theater in a very good mood and that is the sign of how I felt about a film. One thing I want to comment about is that I know the film is rated PG-13, but this film had to be a borderline R rated film just due to the content. Oh and stick around till the very end of the film cause they possibly set up a future film. I am going to give X-Men: Apocalypse an A- for a final grade.

Day 43: Deadpool (2016)

deadpool-movie-2016-5k-wallpaper-5120x2880I have been waiting so long to see this movie ever since Fox announced that it was making a Deadpool movie with Ryan Reynolds (X-Men Origins: Wolverine). The film Deadpool is the perfect marriage as Reynolds plays the role he was born to play as Wade Wilson a.k.a. Deadpool. The film explores the origins of Deadpool and how he became the Merc with a mouth. Everything is going great for the mercenary as he found the perfect girl for him in Vanessa (Morena Baccarin). That is until Wade finds out that he has terminal cancer and things start to fall apart for him until a man (Jed Rees) tells him that he can cure him. Wade goes for it, but because of the treatment and what Ajax (Ed Skrein) does to him leaves him disfigured. Now, Deadpool is out for revenge and he is looking for Ajax and maybe a cure for his disfigured body. The film also stars Michael Benyaer (Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen) as Warlord, Stefan Kapicic (Tears For Sale) as Colossus, Brianna Hildebrand (First Girl I Loved) as Nagasonic Teenage Warhead, T.J. Miller (Cloverfield) as Weasel, Gina Carano (Fats & Furious 6) as Angel Dust, and the film was directed by Tim Miller in his first feature film as a director.

deadpool-gallery-04-gallery-imageSpoiler Alert: if you do not want to know what happens in the film then do not read any further because I may give information away. I am just going to go ahead and say that this is one of the best superhero movies out there that was not done by Warner Brothers or Marvel/Disney. I am so glad that they made the film rated R because it added so much and it allowed Deadpool to be Deadpool in all the ways we want him. My favorite thing about the film is how he breaks the fourth wall with us and he knows that he is in a film. He cracks so many jokes in the film and he pokes them at Fox, Marvel/Disney, etc.which is just awesome. There is so much action and blood shed in the film to satisfy any fan of action and superhero movies. The soundtrack to the film is pretty awesome as well with a huge mix of so many types of pop culture. I also loved how in an idea Colossus represents Marvel and DC in a way symbolically. Think about it, they don’t really want people dying in their films and that is what Colossus is constantly preaching in the film. Deadpool told all you parents out there and I am saying that if you can’t handle nudity, strong language, and violence then don’t be an idiot and do not bring your kids to see the film. We do not want you complaining about all of those things. This is our movie and we want to enjoy every second of it and the sequel as well which has been announced. Stick around for the last scene because Deadpool tells you whose going to be in it. Check the movie out because it is totally worth it. I am giving the movie an A+ for a final grade.

Day 35: Eulogy (2004)

EulogyFor today’s film, I only have one question to ask all of you and it’s are you ready to meet one of the most dysfunctional families ever? The film is called Eulogy and it stars Zooey Deschanel ((500) Days Of Summer) as Kate Collins, a girl who is supposed to give a eulogy at her grandfather’s funeral. The only problem is that she doesn’t know what to say and looks to her father (Hank Azaria), a failed actor turned pornstar and his dysfunctional siblings which include a lesbian, an overbearing bitch, and a sleazeball for some memories of the old man which turns out to be a project. Oh not to mention that she has to help prevent her grandmother from committing suicide in this black comedy. The film stars Debra Winger (Urban Cowboy) as Alice Collins, Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond) as Skip Collins, Kelly Preston (Twins) as Lucy Collins, Rip Torn (Men In Black) as Edmund Collins, Piper Laurie (Carrie) as Charlotte Collins, Famke Janssen (X-Men) as Judy, Glenne Headly (Don Jon) as Samantha, Jesse Bradford (Romeo + Juliet) as Ryan, and the film was directed by Michael Clancy.

aaeulogy26I have found in the past that some black comedies can be a little hard to digest only because you are trying to find the humor in the film. I think since I have grown up so much and found how crappy life can be, it’s easier to find it now when your cynical. I thought that I have seen some real dysfunctional families in my time, but nothing tops the Collins family who are in for the biggest surprise towards the end. If you like character driven movies, I think this is a great film for characters because everyone in the film is just so darn unique and the personalities of some while typical are just as interesting too. I was watching this film and I did not realize that Debra Winger was in the movie the whole time. She does an amazing job playing the overbearing, hypocritical, controlling sister while the always beautiful Kelly Preston just looks amazing as she plays the lesbian sister. Ray Romano plays your prototypical bonehead, disgustingly perverted, can’t handle feelings kind of guy. Famke Janssen’s character is very witty as she has to be as the controversial soon to be wife of Kelly Preston in the film. Don’t think by all that that Zooey’s character is the only normal one in the film because she has issues of her own as well. The movie has it all from your drama filled subplots that unfold before your very eyes to those moments that you just laugh with. I honestly had never heard of this film, but I am glad that I caught it on HBO when I did. I am going to give this film an B+ for a final grade.
