I wouldn’t be 100% honest with all of you if I didn’t tell you that I wasn’t sure about today’s film that I chose for you. I have always been skeptical about films that are associated with the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment), but nevertheless the film I chose for today is the new horror film Incarnate. Aaron Eckhart (Thank You For Smoking) stars as Dr. Seth Ember, a tortured soul with a very cool ability that only a few people here and there possess. You see he can travel into the minds of people to free them of the demons that have taken over their bodies. One day he gets called to a job that even the church won’t allow their priests to take when a child is possessed with a demon he knows all too well. The film also stars Emjay Anthony (The Jungle Book) as Jake, Catalina Sandino Moreno (Maria Full Of Grace) as Camilla, Matt Nable (Riddick) as Dan, Breanne Hill (San Andreas) as Ilsa, Karolina Wydra (Be Kind Rewind) as Anna, Keir O’Donnell (Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes) as Oliver, Tomas Arana (Guardians Of The Galaxy) as Felix, WWE Wrestler Mark Henry as a Bouncer, and the film was directed by Brad Peyton (Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore).
I have to completely honest because I am a huge Horror fan which is why I do and have done Eddie’s 31 Days Of Halloween for as long as I have. I’ve seen some really bad horror films and some really good ones and I’ve seen some that had the right idea, but the execution just wasn’t there. This is definitely one of those films where the execution just wasn’t there, but the idea was cool. It was definitely a different take on the whole exorcism sub-genre of horror. It’s basically Flatliners meets The Butterfly Effect meets The Exorcist sub-genre. He basically Flat-lines so that he may enter a dream state to be able to drive the demons or as he calls them Parasites out of the victims. The problem I had with the film was the writing because some of the actions and lines were just corny and overused as hell.We have all seen it before and some of the actions were just too erratic to make at the point they were made. Aaron Eckhart does a great job with the film, but the film just falls flat on it’s face like when a person flatlines. I am having a hard time trying to decide what grade I should give the film because it wasn’t so terrible, but let’s just say this is a wait until it comes out in Redbox or On-demand. I am going to give the film a grade somewhere between an C- and a D+. It’s in that range for sure.
One of my favorite childhood memories was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles whether it was the original cartoon series or the original films. With the series back in action, I decided to take the chance and watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows. In the second film of the reboot series, the turtles Leonardo (Pete Ploszek), Michelangelo (Noel Fisher), Donatello (Jeremy Howard), and Raphael (Alan Ritchson) are still living in the shadows because they feel society is not ready for them. With the threat of Shredder (Brian Tee) out on the loose and a giant Rhino and Warthog causing havoc, the duo are forced to come out and try to save New York City from a threat they never thought imaginable from another dimension. The film also stars WWE Superstar Sheamus as Rocksteady, Gary Anthony Williams (The Internship) as Bebop, Megan Fox (Jennifer’s Body) as April O’Neill, Will Arnett (The Lego Movie) as Vernon Fenwick, Stephen Amell (Arrow) as Casey Jones, Tyler Perry (Diary Of A Mad Black Woman) as Baxter Stockman, Tony Shalhoub (Monk) as Splinter, Brad Garrett (Everybody Loves Raymond) as Krang, Laura Linney (Mystic River) as Chief Vincent, Brittany Ishibashi (Everything Before Us) as Karai, Jane Wu (Captain America: Civil War) as Jade, and the film was directed by Dave Green (Earth To Echo).
I have to admit that I liked this film better than the first one because they kind of got it right with this one. I was super pumped to see Bebop and Rocksteady in the film and they were awesome. They were everything you would expect from them and major props to Sheamus for a job well done in this one. I was also very happy to see Krang and how they made him look in the film. It was a cool nod to the cartoon version of Krang especially with his robotic body. One thing that was a major improvement from the first film to this one was Shredder as he went from Super Shredder in the first film to a bad ass looking Shredder in this one. Although I do have to say that I could of used a little more Shredder than we were given, but that’s OK because we had Bebop and Rocksteady. The movie had plenty of action that keeps you glued to your seat and plenty of comedy especially from my favorite turtle Michelangelo. One of my favorite moments in the film is when the duo is in Brazil and Raphael hits the water and he sees a regular turtle on the shore. I just thought it was a funny moment between the two. I also love the battle scene between Casey Jones and Bebop and Rocksteady. It was a game of wits between the three and we can all imagine who came out on top. This was a step in the right direction for the series and I can only hope that maybe we’ll get one more, but I am not sure. It definitely made more money than what it cost to make so here’s to hoping for a third film. I am going to give the film an A- for a final grade.
Spring Break is supposed to be a time when college kids absolutely let go of their inhibitions and they let it all loose. No matter what it is, they just let go and have fun, but there are four girls who are about to have a different kind of spring break. In the film Spring Breakers, four college girlfriends Faith (Selena Gomez), Candy (Vanessa Hudgens), Brit (Ashley Benson), and Cotty (Rachel Korine) head down to Florida for a spring break that they will never forget. The girls want to get away from school for once, but they have no money to do so. So, they hold up a restaurant in order to fund their trip, but once they get there things get out of control especially when they run into a drug dealing gangster named Alien (James Franco). The film also stars Gucci Mane (Confessions of a Thug) as Archie, Heather Morris (Fired Up!) as Bess, Ash Lendzion (Ex In The City) as Forest, Former WWE/TNA wrestler Jeff Jarrett as Youth Pastor, Emma Holzer (What Maisie Knew) as Heather, Russell Stuart (The Good Wife) as DJ, Thurman and Sidney Sewell (DGK: Parental Advisory) as The ATL Twins, and the film was directed by Harmony Korine (Kids).
This is definitely a very interesting film and I certainly mean interesting. The film goes from being an MTV special on Spring Break (like the kind we got in the 90’s) to a gangster story for the rest of the film. It was kind of a weird story to say the least because if you left for five or ten minutes, you would be left confused as to where the story went. The beginning of the film is like straight out of girls gone wild meets MTV Spring break like I said before and then it transforms into Scarface, but the girls are absolutely bad ass. The true highlight of the film though is James Franco only because he plays a bad ass gangster/rapper and it’s really convincing. When I saw that the director of the movie Harmony Korine was involved with the film Kids, I could see it right away with the look and feel of this film. It’s hard to describe the style, but the tones are very dark while also being very bright as certain colors are emphasized more than others. It’s a documentary style kind of look to the film and I love it cause it’s different. I’m still trying to figure out what robbing people and being gangster has to do with Spring Break, but I guess it’s that anything can happen in what Korine calls a beach noir film. I am going to give the film a grade somewhere between C+/B-. I think more towards the C+ range than the other.
For today’s Ass Whoopin Wednesday film, I chose a film that I wanted to check out for a while when I heard that WWE wrestler Dean Ambrose was the latest to get into films. Dean is the latest to star in 12 Rounds 3: Lockdown which he plays a troubled Detective named Shaw. Dean is returning to the job for the first time in months after the death of his partner. While on the job, he discovers some corruption in the precinct involving a former partner and he decides to investigate it. Detective Burke (Roger R. Cross), the corrupt cop gets wind of what Shaw is doing and to protect his own behind, he puts the whole building into lockdown and he hunts Shaw. Shaw only has 12 rounds in his gun to help defend himself while he tries to figure out a way to get the evidence out. The film also stars Daniel Cudmore (X-Men: The Last Stand) as Gideon, Lochlyn Munro (Scary Movie) as Darrow, Ty Olsson (X-Men 2) as Harris, Sarah Smyth (50/50) as Officer Taylor, Rebecca Marshall (That’s My Boy) as Captain Matthews, Kirby Morrow (RoboCop) as Saul, Toby Levins (Godzilla) as Meeks, Sharon Taylor (Stargate: Atlantis) as Carmen, Hugo Steele (Man Of Steel) as Hurst, and the film was directed by Stephen Reynolds (Vendetta).
