Day 289: Feast (2005)

At one time, Project Greenlight was a super cool idea by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon that gave young filmmakers a chance to have their art seen. One of the films I chose for today was the winner of season three and that film is called Feast. In a remote bar in the middle of the desert, it’s normal everyday life for the patrons and the workers of the bar until a coupe show up on their doorstep. A character simply known as the Hero (Eric Dane) show sup and tells the patrons that he is being chased by monsters that want to eat him and everyone inside. After he is murdered almost immediately, his wife, the heroine (Navi Rawat) shows up to lead the bar in attempt to survive before the monsters get them. The film also stars Henry Rollins (Heat) as Coach, Balthazar Getty (Lord Of The Flies) as Bozo, Judah Friedlander (30 Rock) as The Beer Guy, Josh Zuckerman (Sex Drive) as Hot Wheels, Jason Mewes (Chasing Amy) as Edgy Cat, Clu Gulager (A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge) as Bartender, Jenny Wade (Brothers) as Honey Pie, Krista Allen (Liar Liar) as Tuffy, Duane Whitaker (The Devil’s Rejects) as Boss Man, and the film was directed by John Gulager (Piranha 3DD). Day 205: Titan A.E. (2000)

Haven’t you ever wondered if there was life in other planets or galaxies? What if I was to tell you that 1000 plus years into the future that Earth has mastered the art of deep space travel and that we have interacted with several different species. Your mind would be blown and that is the case for the film Titan A.E.. For Cale (Matt Damon) life is a little different because his father had been working on a project called Project Titan. When a certain alien race known as the Drej caught wind of this, they destroyed the planet Earth. Fast forward fifteen years into the future, Cale is working on a scavenger ship when he is told that he may hold the key to finding Project Titan which could potentially save the human race from the evil Drej. So, he takes on the mission which will prove to be far from easy. The film also stars Bill Pullman (Independence Day) as Captain Joseph Korso, Drew Barrymore (E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial) as Akima, John Leguizamo (Ice Age) as Gune, Nathan Lane (The Birdcage) as Preed, Janeane Garofalo (Mystery Men) as Stith, Tone Loc (Ace Ventura: Pet Detective) as Tek, Ron Pearlman (Hellboy) as Professor Sam Tucker, and the film was directed by Don Bluth, Gary Goldman, and Art Vitello.

Spoiler Alert: Before you continue to read on, please be advised that this paragraph may contain spoilers. Proceed with caution. I love these kinds of animated films because it reminds me a lot of Heavy Metal and many others like it. While it could be predictable at times, Titan A.E. was actually a very fun film to watch with a very good story. That was my favorite part of the whole film was the fact that I loved the story. Imagine that the key to saving the human race is in a ring that some kid has been carrying for a while and had no idea his father put it on his finger. The only reason why I said that the film could be predictable at times was because you could tell right from the start that Cale and Akima were going to be a thing in the film. You knew that they were going to be double crossed at some point in the film and that happened twice. Like I said, that didn’t deter me from continuing on. The key to great acting in an animated film is making sure that they convey the proper emotions and you do it right. I would like to think that all of them did a great job throughout the film especially comedian Jim Breuer who plays a cook in the film (I didn’t know he did). I did love the enemy alien race who are made of energy. The one thing that kind of caught my attention about them was the fact that they are treated like they are the enemy, but I believe someone int he film mentioned something vital. They mentioned that they destroyed Earth because they were afraid that the humans were creating something dangerous. That doesn’t make what they did OK, but fear is the mind killer. If you’re a fan of science fiction based action adventure animated films, then I would definitely suggest checking this one out. I am going to give the film an A- for  final grade.

Day 195: The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)

Jason Bourne is coming out in theaters on July 29TH and to celebrate the upcoming release of the film, I am watching all the films in the Bourne series. For this week’s Ass Whoopin Wednesday movie, we are watching the third film in the series The Bourne Ultimatum. Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) is back and the film kind of takes place right after the events of the second film. Jason finds that a journalist (Paddy Considine) has written about him in a newspaper, but when the journalist is killed, he stumbles on to something new that could lead him to the beginning. Unfortunately for Jason, there is a CIA official (David Strathairn) that is determined to stand in his way no matter what it takes even if it means eliminating people. The film also stars Joan Allen (Death Race) as Pam Landy, Julia Stiles (10 Things I Hate About You) as Nicky Parsons, Scott Glenn (Urban Cowboy) as Ezra Kramer, Edgar Ramirez (Wrath Of The Titans) as Paz, Albert Finney (The Big Fish) as Dr. Albert Hirsch, Daniel Brühl (Captain America: Civil War) as Martin Kreutz, Corey Johnson (Ex Machina) as Wills, Tom Gallop (Jerry Maguire) as Tom Cronin, and the film was directed by Paul Greengrass. Day 188: The Bourne Supremacy (2004)

Jason Bourne, the fifth film in the Bourne series comes out on July 29Th in theaters everywhere and I have not seen the whole series. So, what better place then here to start watching the series to catch up before the release of the film. For Ass Whoopin Wednesday, we are checking out the second film in the series The Bourne Supremacy which once again stars Matt Damon (The Bourne Identity) as Jason Bourne. Jason and Maria (Franka Potente) have been in hiding for the last two years, but a mysterious Russian hitman (Karl Urban) has managed to track him down in Goa, India. Kirill (Urban) manages to kill Maria instead of Jason and that sets Jason off to try and find some answers, but Jason walks into a sh** storm in Berlin. Jason is accused of murdering an agent and CIA official Landy (Joan Allen) is on the hunt. Bourne has to find some answers in order to clear his name before Landy can get to him. The film also stars Brian Cox (The Bourne Identity) as Ward Abbott, Julia Stiles (Save The Last Dance) as Nicky, Gabriel Mann (Revenge) as Daniel Zorn, Marton Csokas (xXx) as Jarda, Tom Gallop (Jerry Maguire) as Tom Cronin, Oksana Akinshina (Hipsters) as Irena Neski, and the film was directed by Paul Greengrass (Captain Phillips). Day 174: The Bourne Identity (2002)

Jason Bourne comes out on July 29, 2016 and since I haven’t seen any of the Bourne films in the series, I figured I might as well start now. Also, since I do a weekly post called Ass Whoopin Wednesdays, I figured this would be the perfect place for it. So for almost every Wednesday, I will be reviewing every Bourne film in the series and I start with The Bourne Identity. Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting) plays government assassin Jason Bourne, but the only problem is that he doesn’t know that. You see Jason was shot and left for dead in the Mediterranean Sea and since he has come to he doesn’t know who he is or why all of a sudden people are after him. With the help of a girl he just met named Marie (Franka Potente), he’ll try to put the pieces together before he becomes extinct. The film also stars Chris Cooper (The Town) as Conklin, Clive Owen (Inside Man) as The Professor, Brian Cox (Troy) as Ward Abbott, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Thor: The Dark World) as Wombosi, Gabriel Mann (Revenge) as Zorn, Julia Stiles (10 Things I Hate About You) as Nicolette, Orso Maria Guerrini (The Conformist) as Giancarlo, and the film was directed by Doug Liman (Edge Of Tomorrow). Day 147: Glory Daze (1995)

Today’s film has been sitting on my Netflix cue for quite some time that I am even surprised that it was still around for me to view. Nevertheless, it was a film that featured Ben Affleck a year after his appearance in Dazed And Confused and I figured why not let’s check out Glory Daze. The film follows five college friends/roommates in Jack (Affleck), Rob (Sam Rockwell), Dennis (French Stewart), Slosh (Vien Hong), and Mickey (Vinnie DeRamus) as they face various dilemmas two days before graduation. Jack doesn’t have a girlfriend, but he’s more scared about the unknown part of his future while Rob is about to move to LA, but is afraid of meeting his girlfriend’s mom. Dennis feels that he should transfer to Michigan for a masters, but an offer from a teacher has him thinking twice while Slosh is just a drunk going nowhere fast. Mickey wants a girlfriend, but he’s just too afraid and dumb to realize when opportunity presents itself. The whole group decides to stay, but is it the right decision after all? The film also stars Megan Ward (Encino Man) as Joanie, Kristin Bauer van Straten (True Blood) as Dina, Alyssa Milano (Fear) as Chelsea, John Rhys-Davies (Raiders Of The Lost Ark) as Luther, and the film features appearances from Matthew McConaughey, Matt Damon, Sean Whalen, Brendan Fraser, Leah Remini, and the film was directed by Rich Wilkes (xXx). 

What did I think of this film? Well one thing is for sure and that it isn’t Dazed And Confused and I have a reason for saying that. The film is basically what if O’Bannion grew up and went to college in the 90’s and was an art student. It had that same kind of vibe where the main character is faced with a major life decision and all of a sudden he starts to question the norm. The other thing that made me think of it was seeing Matthew McConaughey in the film. His character made me think that what i that was Wooderson and he had just left Texas and became a UHaul salesman. While it may be one of your typical 20 somethings slacker film, it doesn’t capture the same kind of brilliance other films had before it. It’s surprising considering the caliber of talent that was in this film like Sam Rockwell, Affleck, Fraser, etc. The film isn’t all bad though, it actually nails the 90’s in a way where everyone was overly pissed off at the world and how life wasn’t fair. Thanks to grunge music, Punk made a huge comeback in the 90’s and this soundtrack is full of iconic 90’s punk bands like NOFX, The Bouncing Souls, etc. The film has it’s moments of brilliance, but it’s just too all over the place at times. Like I said, he film is currently available on Netflix as we speak so check it out if you dare. I’m having a hard time giving the film a grade so I say it’s somewhere between a C+/B- as far as a final grade is concerned.
