I was looking around for a film to watch today and I wanted to look for a comedy because I was in that kind of a mood. So, when I logged on to my Netflix account I saw that I had an interesting film to watch on my Queue called The Late Bloomer. Peter Newmans (Johnny Simmons) is a successful sex therapist who is preaching that life is about abstinence to better yourself. What Peter doesn’t realize is that he has never in his life gone through puberty. Peter never knew that he had a tumor that has pressed against his pituitary gland and when he is operated on, his life changes completely including the fact that he has feelings for his neighbor and friend Michelle (Brittany Snow). Now what is he going to do about all of this? The film also stars J.K. Simmons (Zootopia) as James Newmans, Maria Bello (Lights Out) as Brenda Newmans, Kumail Nanjiani (Central Intelligence) as Rich, Beck Bennett (Zoolander 2) as Luke, Paul Wesley (The Vampire Diaries) as Charlie, Jane Lynch (Mascots) as Caroline Chambers, Charlotte McKinney (Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser) as Attractive Woman, Blake Cooper (The Maze Runner) as Josh, Diana Lyubenova (Conan The Barbarian) as Marilyn, and the film was directed by Kevin Pollak (Vamped Out).
I honestly went into this film with an open mind because I wasn’t expecting much out of it, but when I realized the people that starred in this film I was a little more intrigued. The film has some great actors like J.K. Simmons and Maria Bello and it was directed by the awesome Kevin Pollak who is a great actor himself who was directing his first feature length film with this one. So one argument for the film that I saw online was that it was kind of like The 40 Year Old Virgin, but with a guy who isn’t really socially awkward like Steve Carell was and I beg to differ a little bit. While I loved The 40 Year Old Virgin, I definitely really enjoyed this one because it took the idea and it ran with it in a totally different direction. The funny connection between the two really is the fact that Jane Lynch starred in both films. This one has it’s raunchy moments and friends like the other one, but in a different way. Kumail Nanjiani was given the green light to be as nasty as he wanted to be and he succeeded because he and Beck Bennett made a great combo in this film like Rudd and Rogen. Alright, so I can’t really come up with too many differences because there is a crap ton of similarities in the structure of the story. You can’t knock the formula cause it worked and there were some real funny moments in this one. You also get treated to some T&A in the film which is definitely a plus. I am going to give the film a B+ only because it’s not completely original and not as completely funny as The 40 Year Old Virgin.
Hollywood has always been looking for new and inventive ways to scare the living crap out of you and we the public always attend. We like getting scared so it should comes as no surprise that I chose to watch the new horror film Lights Out for today’s film. For a boy named Martin (Gabriel Bateman), things in his life are anything, but normal. You see Martin lost his dad to a strange death, his mother (Maria Bello) is taking to herself (or someone…), and anytime he turns the lights off, he sees a really scary woman who wants to kill him. He’s having a hard time finding anyone to believe him until his older half sister Rebecca (Teresa Palmer) sees the same things that he does. They then find out that this ghost may be connected to their mother so they’ll have to try anything to save her and themselves before it’s too late. The film also stars Alexander DiPersia (I Am Legend) as Bret, Billy Burke (The Twilight Saga: New Moon) as Paul, 
Spoiler Alert: I just wanted to take the time to issue a spoiler alert because some information may be discussed that could potentially spoil the film. So, read on if you dare or stop if you do not seek to know. I wanted to start this off by saying that I was very impressed with the film because they were honestly trying to scare the crap out of you the whole time. It was a really creepy and clever story that will surely make someone somewhere not want to turn off the lights. I love how in the story, Diana has a personal connection to them through their mother and that it has to do with her not being well. Diana is able to take over and manifest herself into the real world because someone is week and that is when she takes over. I loved the story of the film, but was it truly scary? I think I am so used to this films and so desensitized as this point in my life that nothing truly scares me, but the film is spooky. I just wanted to take the time now to say that Teresa Palmer looks super hot in this film as a metal chick. I am a huge fan of hers and what she can do on screen. There hasn’t been a film that I have seen with her that I haven’t been impressed with. Maria Bello was fantastic once again playing a mentally unstable sick woman like she did in Prisoners, Gabriel Bateman did a great job as the star of the film, and Alexander DiPersia provided us some comedic relief. One thing is for sure, when I saw James Wan’s name attached to this as a producer, I was like of course cause it felt like a James Wan film (if that makes any sense to you). Nevertheless, go check this out and I am going to give the film a grade somewhere between an B+/A- for a final grade.
I think I have mentioned before that I usually do not like to watch films that are based on movies, but what can you do when Chloë Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass) stars in the movie. The movie that I chose for today is called The 5TH Wave and it follows a young girl named Cassie (Moretz) as she recounts each horrific wave of the alien takeover. You see one day the aliens showed up and they slowly began taking over the earth trying to eliminate the humans. All Cassie has left in the world is her little brother Sam (Zackary Arthur), but Sam was taken away by the military who said they were there to help. All Cassie wants to do is get back to Sam before it’s too late. The film also stars Gabriela Lopez (Million Dollar Arm) as Lizbeth, Nick Robinson (Jurassic World) as Ben Parish, Ron Livingston (Office Space) as Oliver Sullivan, Tony Revolori (Dope) as Dumbo, Liev Schreiber (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) as Vosch, Maria Bello (Prisoners) as SGT. Reznik, Maika Monroe (It Follows) as Ringer, Talitha Bateman (Life Grows On) as Teacup, Alex Roe (The Calling) as Evan Walker, and the film was directed by J Blakeson (The Disappearance Of Alice Creed).
Most of the teen aimed book films that we have seen never deal with what has happened, you just assume that some bad things happened. This film deals with what happened and it moves through the different waves which is pretty much everyone’s fear. Giant waves as one of the waves, losing electricity to make us act like animals, and so on and so forth. I have to be perfectly honest and say that this actually wasn’t that bad of a film, it was actually pretty good. Chloë Grace Moretz was as good as you would expect her to be, but for me Maika Monroe was awesome as the bad ass chick that you don’t mess with. I had been waiting to see her in a film since I had seen her amazing performance in It Follows. The movie also has all the things you would want as far as the story is concerned with the twists (I never read the book) and the paranoia of who is human and who is an alien pretending to be human? The cinematography is great especially during the flooding scenes and the acting was very good. Now as far as a second film is concerned, I have no idea because I don’t remember if this film did well in the theaters or not to warrant a second film. I actually would love to see what happens next to our protagonists. So, I am going to recommend this film cause it’s worth at least a watch. I am going to give the film an B+ for a final grade.
