Day 330: How To Be Single (2016)

howFirst off, I understand that I might have chosen a chick flick for today, but it is a comedy and it features Rebel Wilson (Pitch Perfect). The other thing is that the film also features the very beautiful Dakota Johnson and with that being said How To Be Single is today’s film. Alice (Johnson) has been dating Josh (Nicholas Braun) all throughout college and she just wants some time apart from him to make sure that he is the right guy for her. So, with the help of her new friend and co-worker, the wild and voluptuous Robin (Wilson), she throw herself on the dating scene. After figuring out that maybe it isn’t for her, she tries to go back to Josh, but discovers that it’s too late cause he has moved on. Now she has to figure out what to do before she stays single for too long. The film also stars Leslie Mann (The Other Woman) as Meg, Damon Wayans Jr. (Let’s Be Cops) as David, Anders Holm (The Intern) as Tom, Alison Brie (The Lego Movie) as Lucy, Jason Mantzoukas (Dirty Grandpa) as George, Jake Lacy (Balls Out) as Ken, Colin Jost (Staten Island Summer) as Paul, Brent Morin (Undateable) as Lucy’s Date, and the film was directed by Christian Ditter (Love, Rosie).

giphyWhile this film is definitely a chick flick, it has some redeeming qualities to it. It may seem like it bashes guys because it’s all about how their relationships aren’t working or you the fact that you don’t want to get caught as Rebel puts it in the “Dicksand”(dick quicksand). There are some moments when they look absolutely crazy or when the bartender argues that you can’t find chemistry from an online dating app. I love Rebel Wilson because she plays the drunk, crazy, Aussie or Brit very well in every film that she is in and she does have some hilarious moments in the film. The thing I really liked about the film is the fact that it doesn’t just focus on Dakota Johnson’s character, but also on Leslie Mann’s who is trying to deal with the fact that she has put work ahead of her personal life and Alison Brie who believes in using dating apps. The film is kind of like six degrees of the bartender Tom because he is connected to all of them somehow a she tries to figure out his life after a girl wakes him up. So, there is plenty of subplots to drive the story forward and it moves pretty well. It’s just that I am not completely into chick flicks so women may enjoy the film more than me. Having Jason Mantzoukas in the film was definitely clutch by me because his character was hilarious. I am going to go ahead and give the film an B+ for a final grade only because it’s one I probably wouldn’t watch again.

Day 227: Vacation (2015)

home_mainI had been putting off today’s film for quite some time because I don’t believe in the idea of releasing a sequel or reboot of a franchise that was popular thirty years before. Nevertheless, for today I decided to check out 2015’s Vacation which follows in the footsteps of National Lampoon’s Vacation. This time around, Rusty (Ed Helms) is an adult with his own family which includes his wife Debbie (Christina Applegate) and his kids James (Skyler Gisondo) and Kevin (Steele Stebbins). Things are pretty bland for him as he works for a crap airline and things at home just look like they need some sprucing up. So, he decides to take his family across country to Wally World like his father did thirty years before. The film also stars Chris Hemsworth (Thor) as Stone Crandall, Leslie Mann (Knocked Up) as Audrey Crandall, Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia) as Chad, Catherine Missal (Natural Selection) as Adena, Ron Livingston (Office Space) as Ethan, Keegan-Michael Key (Keanu) as Jack Peterson, Regina Hall (Scary Movie) as Nancy Peterson, Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead) as Trucker, Chevy Chase (National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation) as Clark Griswold, Beverly D’Angelo (National Lampoon’s European Vacation) as Ellen Griswold, and the film was directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein who both made their feature length directing debut with this film.

maxresdefault (1)I am going to start off saying that I wasn’t completely let down by the film because it was a good film, but a little too late for it. The film just didn’t have anything that made me laugh my butt off like the original films did. It was like they tried a little too hard to be as goofy and oblivious as the original film, but just couldn’t hit the mark. I really like Ed Helms as an actor, but I thought it was Stu from The Hangover out there the whole time while he is supposed to be Rusty Griswold who I don’t remember being that clueless. The best part of the film in my opinion was the relationship between the two brothers because those gave some great moments in the film and I can’t speak highly enough of Chris Hemsworth. I think once he is done being Thor, he seriously needs to continue his career in comedy. They tried to be like the original without really being the original even teasing you with some scenes that were similar to the original. For example, there is the scene where beautiful supermodel and actress Hannah Davis is driving in a Ferrari which is similar to the scene in the original with Christie Brinkley driving in the Ferrari with different end results to make it new. That was a cool nod, but let’s move on. I loved the scene though with the four cops (Nick Kroll, Tim Heidecker, Kaitlin Olson, and Michael Peña) who were from four different states that couldn’t stop arguing with each other. That was fresh and different, but here is why this film fails in comparison to the original. John Hughes was the master at writing and he wrote the original film and Harold Ramis knew comedy and he directed it. It’s hard to live up to those names, but at least they tried. I am going to give Vacation a grade somewhere between a C+/B- and only because Holiday Road was in the film.

Day 38: The Other Woman (2014)

Moves_TheOtherWomanI was lazy today when it came to choosing a film to watch and there was a film that came out in 2014 that I was curious to watch. The Other Woman begs the question of what would you do if you found out that your husband was having an affair? For Kate King (Leslie Mann), her husband Mark (Game Of Thrones’s Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) is her whole entire life and she doesn’t think she can function without him. That is until one day, she finds out that Mark is having an affair with a lawyer named Carly (Cameron Diaz). Together the two will investigate Mark and figure out that there is another woman, a much younger and beautiful Amber (Kate Upton). Now, the three will stop at nothing as they bond and get back at Mark for all the lying and cheating. The film also stars Don Johnson (Miami Vice) as Frank, Taylor Kinney (Zero Dark Thirty) as Phil, Nicki Minaj (Ice Age: Continental Drift) as Lydia, David Thornton (The Notebook) as Nick, Kenneth Maharaj (Old Dogs) as Busboy, Victor Cruz (The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3) as Fernando, and the film was directed by Nick Cassavetes (Alpha Dog).

The-Other-Woman-2014-StillsI am a huge fan of Cameron Diaz and Leslie Mann, I have enjoyed every movie that they have been in (I believe this is there first together). Sometimes though, I feel that Leslie Mann plays the same role whether it is in Knocked Up, This Is 40, and this film. I didn’t think the film was that bad, it had some funny moments to it, but it’s kind of a chick flick comedy. I did however like the idea of three women who are a part of this love triangle that team together to get back at their cheating husband. They use some of the same tactics that we’ve seen in other revenge comedies like estrogen pills in the man’s shake or laxatives in the drink. If they have comedies known as Bromances, then what do we call a film where sisters band together? Kate Upton looks really hot in this film and she does a decent job. I wasn’t sure what her acting ability was going to be, but she definitely surprised me. I also enjoyed seeing Nicki Minaj and her big booty in the film as she also does a good job in the film. Poor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau started by playing an unlikable character in Game Of Thrones and he plays one in this film. If you enjoy RomCom’s (Romance Comedies) and sismances (my alternative for Bromance unless you come up with a better one), then you may like this one. I am going to give the film a B- for a final grade.
