Day 289: Feast (2005)

At one time, Project Greenlight was a super cool idea by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon that gave young filmmakers a chance to have their art seen. One of the films I chose for today was the winner of season three and that film is called Feast. In a remote bar in the middle of the desert, it’s normal everyday life for the patrons and the workers of the bar until a coupe show up on their doorstep. A character simply known as the Hero (Eric Dane) show sup and tells the patrons that he is being chased by monsters that want to eat him and everyone inside. After he is murdered almost immediately, his wife, the heroine (Navi Rawat) shows up to lead the bar in attempt to survive before the monsters get them. The film also stars Henry Rollins (Heat) as Coach, Balthazar Getty (Lord Of The Flies) as Bozo, Judah Friedlander (30 Rock) as The Beer Guy, Josh Zuckerman (Sex Drive) as Hot Wheels, Jason Mewes (Chasing Amy) as Edgy Cat, Clu Gulager (A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge) as Bartender, Jenny Wade (Brothers) as Honey Pie, Krista Allen (Liar Liar) as Tuffy, Duane Whitaker (The Devil’s Rejects) as Boss Man, and the film was directed by John Gulager (Piranha 3DD). Day 250: Casper (1995)

Sometimes I have to pinch myself when I am doing an entry for the blog because I can’t believe that I have been committed for 250 straight days now. So for the 250TH day, I wanted to watch something special and I chose to watch Casper which was based off of one my favorite cartoons as a child. Carrigan Crittenden (Cathy Moriarty) is money hungry so when she finds out her neurotic father has passed away she goes and finds out that she has inherited an old house with secret treasure inside. When she goes to the house, she discovers that there’s a ghost inside and she decides to hire a ghost shrink named Dr. James Harvey (Bill Pullman). Harvey takes the job and he takes his daughter Kat (Christina Ricci) who befriends the friendly ghost named Casper (Malachi Pearson) while her dad tries to deal with the other three unruly ghosts. The film also stars Eric Idle (Monty Python And The Holy Grail) as Dibbs, Joe Nipote (Viper) as Stretch, Joe Alaskey (Duck Dodgers) as Stinkie, Brad Garrett (Everybody Loves Raymond) as Fatso, Amy Brenneman (Heat) as Amelia Harvey, Devon Sawa (Final Destination) as Casper in Human Form, Chauncey Leopardi (The Sandlot) as Nicky, Jessica Wesson (Milk Money) as Amber, and the film was directed by Brad Silberling (City Of Angels).

Believe it or not, it has taken me 21 years to see this film and to be perfectly honest with all of you I have no idea why. The one thing that I can say about the film adaptation of Casper is that it was fun to watch. You can’t expect an Oscar winning film out of it, but a film that you just have fun watching. This was the type of film that really relied on slapstick comedy to drive the laughs especially with the ghostly trio or the unruly three (whatever you want to call them) and Eric Idle who is a master of it. The one thing I liked about the film that I don’t remember happening with the cartoon was Casper crossing back over to be a human. I thought that it was a very cool move to imagine what he would have looked like as a human being or a fleshy as they call us. I loved seeing Christina Ricci in the film although every time I see her I just think that she is Wednesday Adams all grown up. I don’t know if I have a favorite scene from the film because it was just so enjoyable to watch. The scene where he makes breakfast is pretty good and I even enjoyed the sequence with Carrigan as a ghost as well. The film is currently available on HBOGO as long as you have a subscription to that, but I’m sure you can find it just about anywhere. I am going to recommend this film especially if you were a fan of the cartoon. I am going to give the film an B for a final grade.

Day 173: Jurassic Park (1993)

Haven’t you ever wondered what Dinosaurs were really like millions of years ago? For quite some time, we haven’t really known anything substantial about them, we can only really speculate as to how they were by studying their bones. What if you were given the chance to see how they act in certain environments or how they feed daily? Wouldn’t you love the chance and ability to see that for yourself? In the film Jurassic Park, Mr. Hammond (Richard Attenborough) builds a Jurassic theme park on a deserted island off the coast of Chile that he plans to open to the public that contains dinosaurs. The only problem is that he needs to convince a lawyer and some paleontologists that the park is indeed safe for the public. While on a preview tour of the island, something goes terribly wrong and some of the carnivorous dinosaurs are set free to roam and hunt on the island. The film stars Sam Neill (Event Horizon) as Grant, Laura Dern (Wild) as Ellie, Jeff Goldblum (Independence Day) as Malcolm, Bob Peck (The Kitchen Toto) as Muldoon, Martin Ferrero (Heat) as Gennaro, BD Wong (Jurassic World) as Wu, Joseph Mazzello (The Social Network) as Tim, Ariana Richards (Tremors) as Lex, Samuel L. Jackson (Avengers: Age Of Ultron) as Arnold, Wayne Knight (Seinfeld) as Nedry, and the film was directed by Stephen Spielberg (E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial). 

I have to be honest in saying that I have no idea why it took me 23 years to see Jurassic Park. Well, I am lying with that statement because to be honest when I was 11, Dinosaurs didn’t really interest me enough like they do know. The film is another brilliant look in why man should never play God for anything! I don’t care what it is or what idea we come up with, but we should never play God. If the movies have taught us anything is that it usually ends in disaster. Which is evident with the film I watched today which is simply brilliant. I only have one question for all of you out there and that is am I evil for wanting Lex to get eaten by the T-Rex in one my favorite scenes of the whole entire film? She does everything you are not supposed to do when a T-Rex is approaching your vehicle and that is do not make noise and do not flash a light in it’s face. The film has everything from a Dilophosaurus to a Velociraptor and those sequences alone with those creatures are worth seeing. The action sequences are amazing, the dinosaurs themselves are amazing, but the CGI is totally obvious in the beginning part of when they first arrive at Jurassic Park when Grant sees the Brachiosaurus. The cinematography is amazing with all the shots of the island and the dinosaurs that inhabit it, but other than the CGI thing, the film was absolutely amazing and enjoyable. I cannot wait to see the rest of the series in the coming future. I am going to give Jurassic Park and A for a final grade.

Day 62: Johnny Mnemonic (1995)

For today’s Ass Whoopin Wednesday film, I wanted to check out something else from Keanu Reeves after the news I had heard about John Wick 2. I have always been curious about Johnny Mnemonic and I figured what better time than now and we are promoting a Mixed tag team (man and woman) match this week. In the distant future of 2021, things are a lot different on the planet Earth as corporations now runs things in the world. The way information is delivered has also changed as human couriers named Mnemonics upload information into their heads. Johnny (Reeves) is a courier who agrees to carry an unusually large amount of information that will prove to be dangerous. What I mean by dangerous is that the Yakuza who basically do the dirty work for corporations wants the info in his head and with the help of his new bodyguard Jane (Dina Myer), he will have to do his best to get the information to the proper place before he dies because of it. The film also stars Ice-T (New Jack City) as J-Bone, Henry Rollins (Heat) as Spyder, Dolph Lundgren (Rocky IV) as Street Preacher, Udo Kier (Flesh For Frankenstein) as Ralfi, Tracy Tweed (Sunset Heat) as Pretty, and the film was directed by Robert Longo.
