Did you know that there are roughly 66 days until my favorite holiday of the whole year is here. That holiday I am talking about is Halloween and during the month of October, we have 31 days of Halloween (31 Days of Horror movies). I just couldn’t wait until then and I have one that I think everyone will enjoy for today. Today’s film of course is the much talked about horror/thriller Don’t Breathe. Alex (Dylan Minnette), Rocky (Jane Levy), and Money (Daniel Zovatto) are three friends that live in the slums of broken down Detroit who are desperate to get out of that city at any cost. You may not agree with their method of choice as they rob houses that are monitored by Alex’s dad’s security company. One day, they decide to rob the house of the blind man (Stephen Lang) after they hear about settlement money, but that could prove to be the dumbest thing they have done yet. The film also stars Emma Bercovici in her first role as Diddy, Katia Bokor (World War Z) as Ginger, Sergej Onopko (A Good Day To Die Hard) as Trevor, Franciska Töröcsik (Swing) as Cindy, Christian Zagia (El cojunudo) as Raul, and the film was directed by Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead).
Spoiler Alert: There may be information contained in this Article that could potentially spoil the plot of the film so continue with caution or do not read any further if you do not want to know. Let me just say to all of you out there that this is one intense freaking movie and it’s not your typical horror movie. There’s no supernatural being, monster, or masked serial killer that comes after you. It’s a blind serviceman who uses his sense of hearing to figure out where you are in his house which is just as much of a fortress as the house in The People Under The Stairs (without the freaks). When the hunt is on, it becomes one heck of an intense film that leaves you unknowingly screaming, “you’ve got to be kidding me.” One of my favorite scenes in the film is in the basement when he cuts all of the lights sort of like a welcome to my world bitches. That is one of the most intense sequences and hunts of the film. Then there is some information that you discover towards the end of the film that is just one very disgusting and two kind of twisted. I won’t give that part away, but wait until you see it for yourself. All of the performances in the film were very good and its a relatively small cast as it focuses on the three and the blind man primarily. Stephen Lang is one heck of a twisted and persistent SOB int his film that he is definitely one of my MVP’s of the film with the other going to Jane Levy and Dylan Minnette. I cannot wait for October, but you definitely shouldn’t wait that long to see this film. What are you waiting for, go see it. I am giving the film an A- for a final grade because it was definitely my favorite horror film of the year so far.
Instead of doing Super Sunday on the other blog, I am bringing it here for a film that I sort of boycotted back when it was first released (I’ll explain my reasoning below). Spider-Man 3 was the third and last installment of the Sam Raimi (Evil Dead)/Tobey Maguire Spider-Man series. Things appear to be going quite well for Spider-Man (Maguire) as all the residents of New York love and appreciate him and he has the girl of his dreams in Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst). That all begins to change when a strange black entity from another world appears and bonds with Parker. It starts to drive certain urges in Spider-Man that we are not used to seeing from him as he battles new villains and some new problems because of it. The film also stars Topher Grace (That 70’s Show) as Eddie Brock, James Franco (Pineapple Express) as Harry Osborn, Thomas Haden Church (Daddy’s Home) as Sandman, Bryce Dallas Howard (50/50) as Gwen Stacy, Rosemary Harris (Spider-Man) as May Parker, J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) as J. Jameson, James Cromwell (The Green Mile) as Captain Stacy, Dylan Baker (Trick ‘r Treat) as Dr. Curt Conners, and Elizabeth Banks (Zack & Miri Make A Porno) as Miss Brant.
The reason I avoided this film to be perfectly honest back in 2007 was that I was frankly sick of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man and I did not agree with the casting choice of Topher Grace as Eddie Brock a.k.a. Venom. Topher Grace just wasn’t my first choice to play a bad ass villain, but nevertheless they went with him and I decided to check it out today. While this is definitely not the best film of the Sam Raimi three, it’s definitely not the best of all the Spider-Man movies that have come out including the two Amazing Spider-Man films. The film was just all over the place and there is this one sequence that was just unnecessary and it’s when Parker is walking down New York like he’s John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever. That had to be the cheesiest moment of the whole film, but there are some redeeming values in the film. I wasn’t completely disappointed with the way Venom looked and Topher Grace was OK. I was impressed with him through most of the film when he was just that annoying Eddie Brock trying to top Peter Parker at The Daily Bugle. I loved the film’s choice for Gwen Stacy in Bryce Dallas Howard as she brings beauty to the role and the battle scene towards the end was pretty good as well. One thing they messed up on was the film seemed to abandon the subplot between Parker and Osborn who has basically ruined Parker’s life. After he regains his memory, he goes on a hellbent mission to destroy Parker, but after a little tussle in the lab, it’s over just like that? There’s also one more problem towards the end that I had, but I won’t give that away. So, let’s just say it has something to do with the Sandman. It’s definitely a film that could have been so much more than it was, but Raimi dropped the ball on this one. I am giving the film an C+ for a final grade.
Believe it or not, today’s Ass Whoopin Wednesday film is one that I have never seen all the way through. When I saw that Netflix had John Carpenter’s Escape From LA available to watch online, I jumped at the opportunity to see it. The film once again stars Kurt Russell as the bad ass outlaw Snake Pilskin. It supposedly 15 years after the events of Escape From New York and the world has changed just a little bit. The president changed the constitution and he rules forever and Los Angeles is no longer apart of California in the year 2013 (only criminals and deported civilians are sent there). The problem is that the president (Cliff Robertson)’s daughter Utopia (A.J. Langer) has stolen a device that takes satellites and it can shut down power all over the world and she is somewhere in LA with the villainous Cuervo Jones (Georges Corraface) . So, the president gets Snake Pilskin into LA to retrieve the device in 10 hours or he dies and the whole world suffers. The film also stars Peter Fonda (Easy Rider) as Pipeline, Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire) as Map To The Stars Eddie, Valeria Golino (Rain Man) as Taslima, Stacy Keach (American History X) as Cmdr. Malloy, Pam Grier (Coffy) as Hershe Las Palmas, Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead) as Surgeon General Of Beverly Hills, Michelle Forbes (Battlestar Galactica) as Brazen, and the film was directed by John Carpenter.
